Profile

Jessica Rushton is a PhD researcher at the University of Durham. Her work focuses on the 19th-century figure of the rebellious maidservant in French literature and how she is transposed into 20th- and 21st-century French novels and cinema. Her thesis explores the figure in the works of Stendhal, Maupassant, George Sand, Muriel Barbery, Leïla Slimani, and directors such as Lucie Borleteau Céline Sciamma and Chabrol. Her publications include reviews in Acta Fabula and Modern & Contemporary France and an article entitled 'Unmasking the Loyal Maidservant in Germinie Lacerteux' (MuseMedusa, 10, 2022).
