Catherine Smale is Senior Lecturer in German Studies at King’s College London. Her research interests lie primarily in the field of 20th-century and contemporary German literature, with a particular focus on questions of gender and women’s writing. She is the author of Phantom Images: The Figure of the Ghost in the Work of Christa Wolf and Irina Liebmann (London: MHRA, 2013) and has published articles and edited special issues on a range of 20th-century female authors. She is currently working on the gendered conceptualisation of solidarity across different generations of socialist women writers in the German-speaking context.
