Speaker: Jennifer Taylor (Research Centre for German & Austrian Exile Studies, IMLR)
This talk concentrates on the life and work of Paul and Charlotte’s only child, Joanna (Jo), and attempts to assess the impact of exile on her work as a representative of the second generation. The provocative product of Jo’s pop art period, evidence of the vicissitudes of exile, is contrasted to her more orthodox work, testimony to the conformist side of her character which led her to ensure the preservation of her parents’ legacy.
Jennifer Taylor is a founder member of the Research Centre for German & Austrian Exile Studies. She has published widely on several aspects of exile, including the internment correspondence of Paul and Charlotte Bondy, and their contribution to the re-education programme for German-speaking prisoners-of-war after the Second World War.
