English Goethe Society Wilkinson-Willoughby Lecture

What did music mean to Goethe? Apart from reassessing this question, this lecture aims to explore a statement in Goethe’s magazine 'Kunst und Altertum'. It grants Haydn, after a performance of his 'Creation', the distinguishing features of genius: naivety and irony. What was the meaning of irony in Goethe’s time? And how did it figure in his mind?

This event will be held online via Zoom. Participation is free, however, advance registration is required.
