Translating Cultures Theme: Final Report

In a world increasingly characterised by transnational and globalised connections, the need for understanding within, between and across cultures and languages is stronger than ever. Political upheaval triggering the mass movements of people, the rapid development of digital communications and the constant evolution of transport technologies are just some of the forces that are reconfiguring cultures and societies in the 21st century. With a diverse portfolio of projects and a wide variety of outputs and activities, the AHRC’s 'Translating Cultures' theme has – during its lifetime between 2012 and 2019 – addressed these transformations and the challenges that are associated with them by studying the role of translation, understood in its broadest senses, in the transmission, interpretation, transformation and sharing of languages, values, beliefs, histories and narratives. Spanning a wide range of disciplinary areas, and working across five different continents, 'Translating Cultures' projects have engaged researchers, practitioners and experts in order to interrogate the meanings and uses of translation in contemporary as well as historical contexts. Projects have linked universities, communities and NGOs; they have permitted contact with industry and healthcare professionals, with the heritage sector and arts organisations, and with government departments and diplomatic services.
