The Institute is delighted to announce that the podcast of the fascinating lecture given by Alfred Brendel is now available to watch online.

Entitled 'Naivety and Irony: Goethe's Musical Needs', the lecture was given on 21 January 2021, as the English Goethe Society's first Wilkinson-Willoughby Lecture. In his lecture, Brendel considers what music meant to Goethe, and explores a statement made in Goethe's magazine Kunst und Altertum, which grants Haydn, following a performance of his Creation, the distinguishing features of genius: naivety and irony. Brendel discusses the meaning of irony in Goethe's time and how it figured in his mind.
