POSTPONED: Approaching Critical Animal Studies and Environmental Humanities from a Languages Cultures and Societies Perspective
Session Leader: Dr Sarah Arens (University of Liverpool)
This training session offers participants an introduction to the expanding field of Critical Animal Studies, exploring its methodologies within the Environmental Humanities and related disciplines. The session is designed to guide researchers in Languages, Cultures, and Societies on engaging with Critical Animal Studies through a distinctly critical and intersectional lens. It will be especially valuable for those working in Post- and Decolonial Studies, Gender Studies, Queer Theory, and similar areas. Participants will delve into key theoretical questions and practical, ethical challenges central to animal-centered approaches across archival materials, literature, and beyond.
The session will feature small, interactive group work activities and if you can, please read:
Nik Taylor and Richard Twine, ‘Introduction: Locating the “critical” in critical animal studies’, in: The Rise of Critical Animal Studies: From the Margins to the Centre, ed. By Nik Taylor and Richard Twine (London: Routledge, 2014). The introduction is available here (depending on institutional access) and it is available to read on google books.
Please note this session will involve small- and large-group discussions and those who register should be able to attend the full session and be prepared to interact with the session leader and the other participants. The initial presentation will be made available as a recording after the session.
