Speaker: Steve Feller (Coe College, Cedar Rapids, Iowa)

Thousands of enemy aliens, including many distinguished refugees from Nazi Europe, were interned in ten camps on the Isle of Man during the early part of the war. A rich variety of monies were produced in these camps, and they served a number of distinct purposes. In this illustrated talk, based in part by on-site investigations, examples of these monies will be shown and their uses discussed. Another form of currency – train tickets used by the internees to go to work will be shown and also discussed. Some of the internees were sent to Canada and Australia where additional camp monies were produced. After the enemy aliens had left the Isle of Man these camps were used for prisoners of war.
Steve Feller is Professor of Physics at Coe College (Cedar Rapids, Iowa). He has a research interest in civilian camp money of the Second World War and together with his daughter, Ray, has written Silent Witnesses: Civilian Camp Money of World War II (BNR Press, 2007), which was awarded book-of-the-year recognition by the Numismatic Literary Guild of the United States. He has written over 150 articles on numismatic topics including World War II, the Mafeking siege, the American Civil War, and has served as editor of the International Bank Note Society Journal for 17 years.

This seminar will be held online via Zoom. Participation free; advance online registration essential. Registration closes on 23 May.
