Engaging with Publishing Practices and Studies in Languages, Cultures and Societies Research
Session Leader: Dr Katie Brown (University of Exeter)
This training session will explore the intersections between Languages, Cultures and Societies research and the growing field of Publishing Studies. Publishing Studies views publishing as a social practice, conditioned by cultural, political, social and economic factors, which Languages, Cultures and Societies researchers are well-placed to analyse. We will introduce frameworks for approaching Publishing Studies including cultural policy, migration and publishing, circulation, translation and reception. The session leader will also share insights from how research led her to take an active role in publishing projects.
In advance of the session, participants are asked
to read Baverstock, Alison (2020). 'What significance does Publishing Studies
have right now?', Learned Publishing, 33:4, 449-452, available
here: https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/leap.1319
Please note this session will involve small- and large-group discussions and
those who register should be able to attend the full session and be prepared to
interact with the session leader and the other participants. The initial
presentation will be made available as a recording after the session.
