'Wechselkröte'. Reading and Discussion with Ana Marwan and Seán Williams

Ana Marwan reads from and discusses her award-winning short story, ‘Wechselkröte’ ('True Toad'), which won the prestigious Ingeborg Bachmann Literary Prize in 2022. She is joined by journalist, broadcaster and academic Seán Williams, in what promises to be a lively discussion about the text, its themes, and the nuances of its English translation. Following on from the reading and discussion, there will be time for questions from the audience.
This event, moderated by Andrea Capovilla of the Ingeborg Bachmann Centre for Austrian Literature & Culture at the ILCS, University of London, promises to provide fascinating insights into Marwan’s literary work and the creative process behind her acclaimed writing.
The reading will be in German (English translation provided); the discussion will be conducted in English.
Born and raised in Slovenia, Ana Marwan moved to Vienna at the age of 25 to study literature and write prose as well as poetry in both German and Slovenian. Marwan works as a freelance author, and is currently editor of the Austrian literary magazine Literatur & Kritik. Awarded the Ingeborg Bachmann Prize in 2022 for her short story 'Wechselkröte' (Otto-Müller-Verlag, 2022), she is a contributing author to schreibART, a literature programme run by the Austrian Ministry for European and International Affairs.
Dr Seán Williams is Senior Lecturer at the University of Sheffield, a journalist and broadcaster. He specialises in German and European Cultural History and covered the Principality of Liechtenstein for the Economist on the state's 300th anniversary. Williams researches literary and cultural history since the eighteenth century, specialising on the ‘Germanic’-speaking countries. This work includes the intersections of Germany, Austria, and Switzerland with Britain, the Netherlands, and especially Northern Italy.
The event is organised in cooperation with the Ingeborg Bachmann Centre for Austrian Literature & Culture at the Institute of Languages, Cultures and Societies (University of London).
