Session leader: Gitanjali Patel (Shadow Heroes)

The workshop will foreground translation and translation-based methodologies as a resource for research in language classrooms. It will incorporate techniques developed as part of Shadow Heroes work in UK schools. Researchers will first engage in questions around language and power and the effects of language ideologies in the language classroom. Researchers will be introduced to translation-based approaches and explore the opportunities they present to dismantle hierarchies of value and to engage in research which is rooted in the social and linguistic realities of the participants.

This session will involve small- and large-group discussions and those who register should be prepared to interact with the session leader and the other participants.
