This event explores the ways in which a feminist sensibility can inform how we understand and translate women’s subjectivities and experiences in the works of contemporary Argentine dramatists Griselda Gambaro and Mónica Maffía. Mónica Maffía will take part in the event. We will discuss how feminism interacts with politics and activism in their plays.
We will present extracts of translations as a way to open up a discussion with participants on the following topics: Where do feminism and translation intersect in the work of theatre translation? How can feminist approaches form part of a translation strategy? What might the impact of this be for future performances?
The session will be led in English by translator-researchers Catherine Boyle, Gwen Mackeith and Sophie Stevens and will involve sharing and reflecting upon new work: Gwen Mackeith’s recently-published translations of Griselda Gambaro’s plays and Sophie Stevens’ new translations of the work of Mónica Maffía.
The event is organised and supported by Out of the Wings, Language Acts and Worldmaking and the Leverhulme Trust. If you have any questions, please contact Sophie Stevens.
This event is open to anyone with an interest in theatre translation. Registration in advance is required, using the Book Now button at the top of the page.
